Grant Funding Tips
While the grant landscape continually evolves, the ideas below may help you start researching programs to help reduce risk factors affecting your youth.
Funding Sources
Grant availability changes, so start by identifying funding sources rather than specific grants. The example funding sources below examples you may find helpful but are not intended to be a comprehensive list of funding resources. Keep in mind, the grants you pursue should align with your students’ specific needs, based on the KCTC Student Survey and other data resources.
State Funding
Kansas foundations include Kansas Health Foundation and Sunflower Foundation.
Federal Funding
| Organization | Focus Area |
|---|---|
| Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) | Substance use and mental health |
| U.S. Department of Education | Various grants for birth to 12th grade |
| Centers for Disease Control and Prevention | Substance use (Drug-Free Communities) |
| Grants.gov | Multiple youth risk factors |
| Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention | Substance use and violence (e.g., Community and Schools Youth Drug Prevention Program, Enhancing School Capacity to Address Youth Violence, Mentoring Programs for Youth in the Juvenile Justice System) |
| U.S. Department of Justice | Substance use and violence (e.g., COPS Hiring Program, School Violence Prevention Program) |
Collaboration
Districts may benefit by reaching out to local:
- Prevention coalitions
- Mental health centers (see Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services’ Directory of Mental Health Resources in Kansas)
- Law enforcement agencies
- Other organizations invested in youth wellbeing
While funding may be given to a district or an organization outside the district, there may be opportunities for both districts and organizations to collaborate on programming that benefits youth both within and outside of school.
